How to use Chat with your PDF

A step-by-step guide for beginners. It takes about 2 minutes, and you don't need an account.

1. Quick start

1

Open the tool

Click Try it in the top menu, or go to the Try it page.

2

Add your PDF

In the box "1. Your document", do one of these:

  • Drag a PDF from your computer and drop it on the dashed box, or
  • Click the dashed box and choose a PDF, or
  • Click "No PDF handy? Try a sample handbook" to use our example document.
3

Wait for it to read the document

A progress bar shows "Reading page…" and then "Understanding passages…". A short PDF takes a few seconds; a long one can take up to a minute.

When it's ready, you'll see the file name, the number of pages, and a message in the chat: "I've read … Ask me anything about it."

4

Ask a question

Type your question in the box at the bottom of "2. Ask questions" and press Enter or click Ask.

Not sure what to ask? Click one of the suggestion buttons: Summarise this document, What are the key points? or List any dates, deadlines or numbers.

5

Keep the conversation going

Ask follow-up questions like "And for part-time staff?". The chatbot remembers your last few messages.

To switch documents, click "Use a different PDF" on the left.

💡 First time? Use the sample handbook and ask "How many holiday days do I get?" to see how it works.

2. Reading the answers

Every fact in an answer ends with a small page chip, like p. 3. This tells you which page of your PDF the fact came from.

✅ For anything important, like money, dates or legal terms, click the page chip and check the passage yourself. That's what the page numbers are for.

3. Asking good questions

Instead of…Try…
"leave?""How many days of annual leave do full-time staff get?"
"Tell me everything""Summarise this document" or "What are the key points?"
"What about it?""What is the notice period after probation?"
"Is this good?""What does the document say about refunds?"

"No text found. This PDF is probably scanned images…"The PDF is a scan. Use a text version of the document, or run it through an OCR tool first.
"This file is over 20 MB"Use a smaller PDF, or split it into parts.
"Please choose a PDF file"Only .pdf files work. Save Word files as PDF first (File → Save As → PDF).
"The free AI quota is busy right now"Many people are using the demo. Wait a minute, then ask again.
"You've reached the hourly limit of this free demo"Each visitor can ask about 40 questions an hour. Come back a little later.
A yellow note: "Smart search is unavailable right now…"It still works, using keyword search only. Answers may be a little less accurate.
"I couldn't find that in this document."The answer isn't in the PDF, or it's worded differently. Rephrase using the document's own words.
The page looks old or brokenPress Ctrl + Shift + R (on Mac: Cmd + Shift + R) to reload it.
